What is rakeback? The mechanics behind the most useful casino reward
Rakeback returns part of the casino's built-in margin on every bet you place, whether the bet wins or loses. This guide explains where the idea came from, the formula casinos use, how payment schedules differ, and how it compares with cashback and deposit bonuses.

Where rakeback comes from
Rakeback started in online poker. In poker you play against other players, not the house, so the site earns its money by taking a small cut of each pot, called the rake. Poker rooms and affiliates began returning a share of the rake each player paid, and that refund became known as rakeback.
Casino games have no rake in that sense. The casino's margin is the house edge: the percentage of each bet a game keeps on average. When crypto casinos borrowed the term, they applied it to that edge instead. So casino rakeback means a share of the house edge on your bets, paid back to you.
If you are not sure what the house edge is or how big it is for different games, read our house edge guide first. Everything below builds on it.
The rakeback formula
Crypto casinos almost always quote rakeback as a percentage of the house edge, not of your wager:
rakeback = wager × house edge × rakeback rate
The first two parts, wager × house edge, are your expected loss on that bet. Rakeback is a share of that expected loss, paid whether the bet actually won or lost.
Worked example: dice at a 1% edge
You wager $10,000 in total on dice with a 1% house edge.
- Expected loss: $10,000 × 1% = $100.
- At a 50% rakeback rate: $100 × 50% = $50 back.
- At 3.5%: $100 × 3.5% = $3.50 back.
- At 70%: $100 × 70% = $70 back.
Worked example: slots at a 4% edge
The same $10,000 on a 96% RTP slot has an expected loss of $400. At 50% rakeback you get $200. Rakeback is four times higher, but so is your average loss. You end up with an average net cost of $200 on slots versus $50 on dice.
Rakeback reduces your effective edge to house edge × (1 − rakeback rate). It shrinks the cost of play. It never turns a losing game into a winning one.
Effective house edge
The cleanest way to compare casinos is the edge you are left with after rakeback:
| Game edge | 3.5% rakeback | 15% rakeback | 50% rakeback | 70% rakeback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1% (dice, originals) | 0.965% | 0.85% | 0.50% | 0.30% |
| 2.70% (European roulette) | 2.61% | 2.30% | 1.35% | 0.81% |
| 4% (96% RTP slot) | 3.86% | 3.40% | 2.00% | 1.20% |
Rakeback rates at nine crypto casinos
Rates are set by each casino and can depend on VIP level, introductory periods or unlock thresholds. These are the terms attached to the codes we list, last checked in September 2026.
| Casino | Rakeback | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Thrill | Up to 70% of house edge | Credited instantly after each bet |
| Duel | 50% of house edge, flat | No VIP tiers, from the first bet |
| Coins.Game | 10–30% by VIP level | Rate rises with VIP level |
| Gamdom | 15% for 7 days (intro) | Introductory rate with 15BOOST |
| BC.Game | 5–15% of house edge | Starts at VIP level 14 |
| Shuffle | 5% of house edge | Standard rate |
| Stake | 3.5% of house edge | Unlocks after $10,000 wagered |
| Rainbet | +20% rakeback boost for 72h | A temporary boost on its base rate |
| Roobet | Undisclosed % | No published rate |
What the rates mean in dollars
On $20,000 of monthly wagering at a 1% edge, your expected loss is $200. The rakeback on that:
| Casino | Rate used | Rakeback on $200 expected loss |
|---|---|---|
| Thrill | up to 70% | up to $140 |
| Duel | 50% | $100 |
| Coins.Game | 10–30% | $20–$60 |
| BC.Game | 5–15% (VIP 14+) | $10–$30 |
| Shuffle | 5% | $10 |
| Stake | 3.5% (after unlock) | $7 |
Gamdom's 15% only applies for the first seven days with its code, so a monthly figure depends on how much of that wagering falls in the first week. Plug your own figures into the rakeback calculator to compare all nine.
Why casinos pay rakeback at all
Rakeback can look like a casino giving money away, but it is a pricing decision. The casino still keeps the rest of the edge on every bet. A 50% rate on a 1% game means the casino earns 0.5% of turnover instead of 1%, in exchange for players who keep coming back and bet more volume there rather than elsewhere.
That is why rates tend to be highest at newer casinos competing for players, such as Thrill and Duel, and lower at large established brands, which rely more on VIP programmes and promotions. It also explains the unlock thresholds and VIP levels: they reward the players who generate the most turnover.
For you, the useful consequence is simple. If you were going to play a certain amount anyway, playing it where more of the edge comes back lowers your cost. You can see what that looks like over thousands of bets in the dice simulator, and the Thrill guide explains how its instant credit works in practice.
Instant, daily and weekly rakeback
The rate is only half of the picture. Casinos also differ in when rakeback reaches your balance.
Instant
Rakeback is credited after each bet settles. Thrill works this way. Instant payment means the money is immediately part of your balance, and there is nothing to forget to claim.
Accrued and claimed
Many casinos let rakeback build up in a separate balance that you claim manually from a rewards or VIP page. It is usually available at any time. If you never claim it, it just sits there, so check your rewards page occasionally.
Daily, weekly or monthly payouts
Some casinos pay rewards on a schedule instead. These are often bundled with other VIP bonuses and may be calculated differently, so read how the amount is worked out, not just the headline percentage.
Timing affects value less than the rate does. A 50% rate paid weekly is still worth far more than a 5% rate paid instantly.
Rakeback vs cashback vs deposit bonus
The three are often grouped together, but they behave very differently.
| Rakeback | Cashback | Deposit bonus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Based on | House edge on every bet | Net losses over a period | Size of your deposit |
| Paid when winning? | Yes | Usually no | Not applicable |
| Frequency | Every bet, or regularly | Daily, weekly or monthly | Once |
| Wagering on the payout | None at the casinos we list | Varies, sometimes some | Yes, often 30–40× |
| Best for | Regular play | Players who want a cushion on losing runs | One large first deposit on low-edge games |
Cashback returns a share of what you actually lost over a period, such as 10% of last week's net losses. If you finish the week ahead, you get nothing. Rakeback is paid on expected losses, so it pays even during a winning run.
A deposit bonus pays once, up front, and then locks the money behind a wagering requirement. Clearing it can cost more than the bonus is worth, depending on the game. Our wagering requirements guide works through Shuffle's 200% match as an example.
Fine print that changes rakeback
- Unlock thresholds. Stake's rakeback unlocks after $10,000 wagered; BC.Game's starts at VIP level 14.
- Introductory periods. Gamdom's 15% lasts seven days, and Rainbet's boost lasts 72 hours.
- "Up to" rates. A top rate may only apply at higher levels or on certain games.
- Assumed edge. Casinos calculate rakeback on the edge they assign each game. On sports bets and some third-party games, how that is worked out varies, so check the terms.
- Excluded games. Some games may not earn rakeback at all.
How this differs from our rakeback comparison
This article covers how rakeback works. If you have already decided you want it and want to pick a casino, the crypto casino rakeback comparison lists the codes, rates and current offers side by side.
Whichever you choose, the logic stays the same. Rakeback is a discount on play you were going to do anyway. It is worth having, but it is not a reason to bet more, and no rate makes gambling a source of income.
FAQ
What is rakeback in simple terms?
It is a percentage of the house edge on each bet paid back to you, win or lose. On a $100 bet at a 1% edge with 50% rakeback, you get $0.50 back.
Is rakeback a percentage of my bet?
Almost never at crypto casinos. It is a percentage of the house edge on the bet, so a 50% rate on a 1% edge game returns 0.5% of what you wager.
Does rakeback make gambling profitable?
No. Any rate below 100% of the edge leaves a negative expected value. Rakeback only lowers the average cost of the play you were going to do anyway.
What is the difference between rakeback and cashback?
Rakeback is paid on every bet based on the house edge, even if you are winning. Cashback is usually a percentage of your net losses over a period, so it pays nothing in a winning period.
Do I have to wager rakeback before withdrawing it?
At the casinos we list, rakeback carries no wagering requirement. Always confirm in the casino's own terms, since rules can change.
