Choosing a crypto wallet for gambling
Your wallet is where coins wait before a deposit and where they land after a withdrawal. This guide explains the types of wallet, how addresses and networks work, and the habits that keep your funds safe.

What a wallet actually does
A crypto wallet does not store coins the way a purse stores cash. The coins stay on the blockchain. The wallet holds the private keys that prove you can move them, and it gives you addresses where others can send coins to you.
For gambling you use a wallet in two directions. You send coins from it to a casino deposit address, and you give the casino your wallet address when you withdraw. Getting either address or network wrong is the most common way people lose money in crypto, and transfers cannot be reversed.
Custodial vs self-custody
The first choice is who holds the keys.
Custodial wallets
A custodial wallet is held by a company on your behalf. Your exchange account is the usual example. You log in with a password, the company keeps the keys, and it can help if you forget your login. It can also freeze your account, limit withdrawals, or refuse transfers to gambling sites under its terms.
A casino balance is also custodial. Coins you leave in a casino account belong to the casino's wallet until you withdraw them.
Leaving a large balance in a casino account between sessions means trusting the casino to hold it safely and pay it out on request. Many players withdraw winnings to their own wallet regularly and keep in the casino only what they plan to play with.
Self-custody wallets
A self-custody (non-custodial) wallet puts the keys on your device. When you set it up, you get a seed phrase, usually 12 or 24 words, which can restore the wallet anywhere. Nobody else can move your coins, and nobody can recover them if you lose the phrase.
Well-known examples include MetaMask for Ethereum-style networks or Phantom for Solana, but there are many others. Download wallet apps only from the official website or your phone's official app store, since fake wallet apps are a common scam.
Hot vs cold
The second choice is whether the keys are on an internet-connected device.
| Hot wallet | Cold wallet | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Phone app, browser extension or desktop app | Hardware device or offline storage |
| Keys connected to the internet | Yes | No, signs transactions offline |
| Convenience | High, quick to send | Lower, device needed for each send |
| Best for | Small amounts you deposit soon | Savings you do not plan to gamble |
| Main risks | Malware, phishing, fake apps | Losing the device and the seed phrase |
A sensible setup for many players is a cold wallet or reputable exchange for savings, plus a separate hot wallet holding only what you plan to deposit. That keeps your gambling budget apart from everything else, which also helps you stick to it.
Seed phrases: the one thing you cannot lose
Your seed phrase is the master key. Anyone who has it can take everything in the wallet, from anywhere, without your password.
- Write it down on paper or stamp it in metal. Do not store it in photos, notes apps, email or cloud drives.
- Keep it somewhere safe from fire and water, and consider a second copy in a separate place.
- Never type it into a website. No casino, exchange, support agent or wallet will ever need it.
- Anyone who asks for it, including someone claiming to be support, is trying to steal from you.
No legitimate casino, exchange or wallet support team will ever ask for your seed phrase. If anyone does, stop the conversation.
Addresses and networks
Every coin has its own address format, and many tokens live on more than one network. The casino's cashier always shows the network for each deposit address. Your job is to send on exactly that network.
| Network | Address usually starts with | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin | bc1, 1 or 3 |
Several formats, all valid for BTC |
| Ethereum (ERC20) | 0x |
Same format as other EVM chains such as BNB Smart Chain |
| TRON (TRC20) | T |
Used for TRX and USDT on TRON |
| Litecoin | ltc1, L or M |
|
| Solana | Letters and numbers, no fixed prefix | Used for SOL and Solana tokens |
| Dogecoin | D |
|
| XRP Ledger | r |
Casino deposits need a destination tag |
The USDT network trap
USDT exists on TRON, Ethereum, Solana, BNB Smart Chain and other chains. On each one it is a separate token, and coins sent on one network do not appear on another.
The danger is that some addresses look valid on several networks. A 0x address works on Ethereum and on BNB Smart Chain, so a wallet will happily let you send USDT on BNB Smart Chain to a casino address that only watches Ethereum. The transaction succeeds on the blockchain, but the casino never sees it.
XRP destination tags and memos
On the XRP Ledger, casinos and exchanges often use one shared address for all customers and tell deposits apart with a destination tag, a number unique to your account. The cashier shows both the address and the tag. If you leave the tag out, the coins reach the casino's wallet but not your balance, and recovery depends on support.
Other networks have similar fields, sometimes called a memo. If the cashier shows one, it is required. Of the nine casinos we cover, only Stake lists XRP; see the best crypto for gambling for which coins each casino accepts.
Gas and fee coins
Some networks charge fees in their own coin, not in the token you send. To move USDT on Ethereum you need some ETH; on TRON you need TRX (or energy); on Solana a little SOL. Keep a small amount of the fee coin in your wallet, or your token transfer will fail.
Wallet setup for casino use
- Choose a wallet that supports the coin and network your casino lists.
- Install it from the official source and write the seed phrase down offline.
- Set a strong device lock and turn on any app passcode or biometric lock.
- Fund it from a regulated exchange with a small test amount first (how to buy crypto for gambling).
- Save your own receiving address in the casino's withdrawal address book if it has one, and double-check the network.
- Keep only your gambling budget in this wallet.
When you are ready to send, how to deposit crypto at a casino walks through the cashier step by step, and how crypto casino withdrawals work covers the return trip.
Security habits that matter
- Copy and paste addresses, then check the first and last several characters. Clipboard malware can swap a pasted address.
- Bookmark the casino and exchange and use the bookmark, since search ads and lookalike domains are a common phishing route.
- Use two-factor authentication with an authenticator app on your exchange and casino accounts, not just SMS where you can avoid it.
- Ignore direct messages offering bonuses, support or recovery. Use the casino's official live chat only.
- Be careful with connecting your wallet to unfamiliar websites and approving token permissions you do not understand.
- Test new addresses with a small amount before a large transfer.
- Keep software updated on your phone, browser and wallet app.

Common wallet mistakes
- Sending a token on a network the casino does not list.
- Forgetting the XRP destination tag or a required memo.
- Not keeping any of the fee coin, so a token transfer fails.
- Withdrawing from the casino to an exchange deposit address that needs a tag or memo you did not include.
- Storing the seed phrase in a screenshot or cloud note.
- Keeping savings and gambling money in the same hot wallet.
None of these mistakes are about luck. They are all avoidable with a checklist and a test transaction, which is a small cost compared with losing a deposit. If you are just starting out, read crypto gambling: a complete beginner's guide for the full picture.
FAQ
Do I need my own wallet to gamble with crypto?
Not strictly, since you can send from an exchange account, but some exchanges restrict gambling transfers. A self-custody wallet gives you an address you control for deposits and withdrawals.
What happens if I send USDT on the wrong network?
If the casino does not support that network, the funds may not be credited and can be lost. Some casinos can recover them for a fee, but many cannot, so always match the network shown in the cashier.
What is a destination tag?
A destination tag (or memo) is a number used by XRP and some other networks to identify which account at a shared address should receive the funds. Casinos use them for XRP deposits, and leaving it out can mean the deposit is not credited.
Should I use a hardware wallet for gambling?
A hardware wallet is a good place to keep savings you are not using. For day-to-day casino deposits many people use a separate hot wallet holding only a small amount.
